You can catch me preaching from the mountaintops about midwifery! Absolutely the most amazing experience!

Each time I share how I’ve decided to use a midwife and have a natural birthing experience the response is pretty much the same. “You’re so brave!” “I could never do that”. “Aren’t you scared/afraid/fearful?!” And my answer is always the same: “Absolutely not!”

Natural birth is not the choice each woman will make but I think the reasons women conclude to not give birth outside of a hospital have more to do with what they’ve, we’ve, been indoctrinated to believe about ourselves and our bodies.

I came across an article where Mayim Bialik describes her experience with home births and I couldn’t have said it better myself: “Birth is not neat and fast and quiet: it’s gritty and primal. But it’s nothing to fear unless you also think we ought to fear women crying when they are sad or laughing when they are happy.

If we stop viewing birth as an emergency waiting to happen — it’s NOT — then we can stop imposing anxiety on women about birth. I hear many stories about women and babies dying in childbirth that are designed to make me doubt the power of the human body. I grieve for every woman and every child who has died in childbirth, but I honestly resent being encouraged to make decisions based on these stories. It’s irrational, it’s hysteria-inducing, and it’s insulting to any woman’s intuition and intelligence.”

Women’s bodies are incredible! I want to encourage women to realize that if you feel more comfortable giving birth in a hospital, then do so! It’s your right to choose. But I also want women to know that the idea that birth needs to be some anxiety induced medical event that should be overseen and conducted as such could not be further from the truth. Some women need that extra added support and I’m not here to tell them otherwise. However, every birth should not look the same for every woman. Every birth should not fit the confines of a timeline set forth by hospital staff. Every birth does not need medical interventions and monitoring based on something that has the slightest chance of happening. Your birth experience is and should be just that, yours! You can still very much have the birth experience that you are hoping to have within the walls of a hospital but you must be an advocate for this.

I am not naïve to the fact that this will be painful and messy and sporadic and long. But the support I have received from my midwives, doula, and my husband has been overwhelmingly empowering! They’ve given me the tools and the knowledge to prepare myself for the journey I’m about to embark on. I’ve never been more comfortable with a decision in my entire life and I cannot wait to experience the birth of my son in all its miraculous glory!
